The Pinnacle Academy Future City team was invited to meet with President Barack Obama and present their winning project at the White House Science Fair on Oct. 18. Pinnacle Academy is in Oakton. Team members Selin Altintas, Zehra Yilmaz, Nurbanu Simsek, and Madina Khurishanova won first place at the Future City Competition of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area in February 2010. Their winning project, a city named “Yeshilist” was an engineering feat by being a green city that benefited earthquake victims. Yeshilist has solar panel roofs, wind-powered community centers, cork brick homes, and cable trains made from Lego pieces that are scattered around the city. President Obama took the time to congratulate the students on their hard work, stressing the importance of technology and engineering in middle school education. |

Pinnacle Academy was the only school to represent Virginia in this event honoring students across the country who have won competitions in the fields of STEM: science, technology, engineering and math.
